Lions Head

Lions Head is the distinctive shaped mountain slope standing between Signal Hill and Table Mountain forming part of the city bowls dramatic skyline offering you Wally’s Cave and a 360 degree view of Cape Town from the summit. Views of Table Bay, white sandy beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, Robben Island, Three Anchor Bay, Sea Point, Atlantis sand dunes, Koeberg Nuclear Power Station, Blouberg beach and the on going beautiful mountains of the Twelve Apostles mountain range can be expected.

Launch Sites

Lions Head offers two paragliding launch sites:
-A lower launch of 400m (above sea level) asl, that is used when the wind is South West 15-20 km/h

-An upper launch of 470m asl, that is used when
the wind is South to West-South-West 5-20 km/h

Both launches generate thermic upslope breezes because the spire-shape of the peak, the wind diverges around it, causing a strong increase in wind speed at both take-off sites when it is soarable. Thorough pre-flight checks, proper layouts on the the steep confined green nets and committed and competent ground handling skills are required for successful launches.

Requirements

Lion’s Head requires a basic licence with 4 sign offs from a sports rated or higher graded pilot for both take offs. Once the sun has set and you have landed at the sports field in front of the Glen Paragliding Club and next to the Bungalow the pilot who assisted you will happily accept a beer or two for his assistance while enjoying the sunset, chatting away about the awakening paragliding flight you experienced over the beautiful mother city , Cape Town we call home.

* The Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) My Activity Permit (Level 2 – Hang-gliding and paragliding, sport climbing – R370) is required by individuals who make use of the Park. You can purchase this card at Tokai Plantation Office, Tokai Road, Tokai (Mondays to Fridays 08:00-15:45) or List of Cape Town Tourism Visitor Information sales outlets.
